MiDAS Driver Assessors deliver the practical component of Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training – the nationally-recognised standard for people who need to drive a minibus. MiDAS Driver Assessors conduct on-road assessments, offer tailored driving tips and provide constructive feedback. They also conduct the necessary licence checks and ultimately determine whether candidates meet the criteria to pass and gain their MiDAS certification.
Our Training Centre is now one of a handful of locations around the country that offers the training necessary to certify new MiDAS Driver Assessors, as well as providing the refresher training to ensure drivers’ certifications remain up-to-date.
The Training Centre offers three programmes based around the skills needs of its participants:
This two-day programme covers the full range of skills and knowledge required to become a MiDAS Driver Assessor – from licence checks to driver assessment to providing effective driver feedback.
Day 1 of the programme covers:
- MiDAS Structure
- Individual Practical Session for MiDAS Drivers
- Licence Checks
- MiDAS Driving Assessment
- MiDAS Pass/Fail Criteria (Measuring “Safe, Legal & Comfortable”)
- Common Minibus Driving Faults
Day 2 of the programme covers:
- Driving Fault Identification & Analysis
- Constructive Driving Feedback
On-Road Session:
- Driving Assessment
- Appraisal of Assessment Skills
In order to pass, candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
- Demonstrate effective feedback techniques
- Demonstrate accurate assessment scoring
- Pass a multiple choice theory assessment with a mark of at least 80%
If successful, a Driver Assessor certificate will be issued which lasts for two years. This can be renewed through a one day refresher course.
This three-day programme includes all the components of the Standard training mentioned above with a third day dedicated to certifying Driver Assessors to deliver Accessible MiDAS (the extended course that prepares people to drive an accessible minibus).
Days 1 & 2 follow the structure of the MiDAS Driver Assessor training – Standard programme mentioned above.
Day 3 of the programme covers:
- The dimensions of Accessible MiDAS
- Passenger awareness and assistance
- Using passenger lifts and ramps
- Assisting passengers who travel in their wheelchairs
- MiDAS Accessible Assessments
In addition to the pass criteria outlined for the MiDAS Driver Assessor training – Standard programme above, candidates will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate the ability to accurately assess a driver using wheelchair tie down and occupant restraint systems.
If successful, a Driver Assessor certificate, including certification to deliver Accessible MiDAS training, will be issued which lasts for two years. This can be renewed through a one day refresher course.
MiDAS Driver Assessor certificates are valid for two years and can be renewed by successfully completing a MiDAS refresher course. The current refresher course is a one-day, in-person course designed to enhance the skills and abilities to deliver the MiDAS framework to drivers. The current Refresher course covers:
- The enhanced MiDAS framework – ensuring Driver Assessors are comfortable with the updated way of delivering MiDAS, including a review of the online learning modules and revised administrative procedures
- The Individual Practical Session – ensuring Driver Assessors are able to maximise the benefits of the new practical element for drivers
- “Safe, Legal & Comfortable” Driving – how to measure and implement the MiDAS minibus driving standard
- Common minibus driving faults– how to best identify and resolve common faults effectively and in a positive and constructive manner

The training is for people who wish to become MiDAS Driver Assessors. The role of a MiDAS Driver Assessor is to deliver the practical component of Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training – the nationally-recognised standard for people who need to drive a minibus.

MiDAS Driver Assessor training – Refresher is for anyone who has a current or expired MiDAS Driver Assessor certification (either standard or accessible) and wishes to continue delivering MiDAS training.
